At a concessions stand at Boston’s Logan Airport here in Massachusetts, I spotted this wonderful engineering fix to a broken bottled drink dispenser system. The mastery of rubberbands as a fix-it-all medium as shown here is truly sublime. I’m a huge fan of rubberbands, especially Animal Rubber Bands (click to see what I’m talking about) which make the perfect toy for any future young engineer-artist.
Today I was interviewed on the radio for the Jacey Eckhart Show to talk about LOS. Depending upon which side of the fence you are on, we can all be in disagreement about the business of war and peace. However the one fact that most of us can agree upon is that the families of military personnel really face a complex life that is often thrust upon them without choice. In the interview, I referenced this great talk I saw by Helen Fisher at TED that attested to the unique power of women to handle complexity better than men. My wishes for peace and simplicity in 2007 go to all families on all sides.
I was at Builders Booksource in Berkeley, California this week. Here are pictured owners George and Sally with the all-important Teresa. I’ve visited a ton of bookstores in the world and I have to say that this was one of the best ones I’ve ever been to. There’s a bunch of great shops in the Builders neighborhood so it’s well worth a visit.
Management guru Tom Peters kindly wrote endorsement copy for LOS for its release:
“I planned to skim/sample John Maeda’s book, then decide to endorse it–or not. I quickly found myself mesmerized–and thence the only issue was deciding what were the strongest words I could muster in support of The Laws of Simplicity. The book is important; and Maeda has made an absurdly complex subject–simplicity–approachable and usable. Bravo! I hope the people who design the products I’ll acquire in the next ten years take this book to heart.”
He graciously went another step this week by adding LOS to his list of Cool Friends interviews by Editorial Director Erik Hansen.
